This article introduces the features and applications of TOKUSHIKI's photocatalytic titanium oxide dispersions that use titanium oxide, a typical photocatalyst.
What is photocatalytic titanium oxide dispersion?
Photocatalytic Titanium Oxide dispersions are dispersions that use the role of titanium oxide as a catalyst in chemical reactions by light energy.
When photocatalytic titanium oxide is exposed to light (ultraviolet light), it reacts with the surrounding water molecules, forming a highly hydrophilic hydroxyl group (-OH group) on the surface of titanium oxide, thereby increasing its affinity with water molecules and developing superhydrophilicity. This makes it easier for surface dirt to float and flow down. In addition to this antifouling property, the super hydrophilic surface has the characteristic of less fogging, so it also imparts an antifogging effect.
At the same time, oxidative action occurs in the reaction with water molecules, which leads to oxidative decomposition of odor components.
Such a combination of functions is called self-cleaning.
However, there is a problem that the hydrophilicity of photocatalytic titanium oxide cannot be volatilized without sunlight. Recently, some types are able to exert photocatalytic effects even in visible light, but they are still expensive and therefore have not been widely used.
In addition, the hydrophilic pathway produces substances with very strong oxidizing power, which may damage organic substances such as resins. Therefore, caution should be exercised.
TOKUSHIKI's photocatalytic titanium oxide dispersions can be added to a variety of water-based coating agents to achieve the aforementioned self-cleaning properties on the coating film surface. In addition, it is made into fine particles, so it is excellent in transparency.
